This is what kept me up last night. . .

I’m out of my office this week on a short break before starting out the New Year. During my travels, I typically stop off at this one clothing retailer when I’m up this way. I like what they have to offer and their clothes are the perfect thing for just hanging out.

To my dismay, I walked into this store yesterday and saw only two or three racks of left-over clothes in an otherwise empty store. There were signs announcing magnificent savings on everything, but not one saying they were closing up shop.

As I walked further along that strip of stores, I saw those all-too-familiar signs of “Retail Space for Rent” where I had known there to be great restaurants, gift shops, and other retailers just a few months ago.

What kept me up all night was knowing that I had answers for each and every one of these stores that could have prevented them from closing or going out of business.

In fact, I know that most of these places did NO marketing what so ever and just lived off the walk-by traffic they received. When things started to slow down, they had no way to reach their customers because they had no mailing list and had no idea even how to do such a simple thing.

So they suffered and hung on as long as possible before throwing in the towel.

If only they had taken the time to build a simple mailing list. They could have sent out a simple postcard to past customers letting them know about any number of specials they could offer. While this alone may not have been enough, without a list, you don’t have any shot of saving your business.

They could have rented their list to other businesses, done cross-promotions and would have had a powerful bargaining tool for joint-ventures.

In fact, these businesses would have had several powerful shots at keeping the doors open and even seeing growth in their business at a time when so many others are struggling and losing the battle altogether.

And, for less than $20 they could have discovered how to do all of this. I just couldn’t sleep last night.

Then I thought about YOU and YOUR BUSINESS. Do you have a list? Do you know what to do with your list? Do you know how to create a low-cost postcard that will get response?

Sadly, most business owners have no clue about any of this stuff. Many go about their day hoping that people find them.

On the other hand, the more successful businesses are pulling out all the stops, they are contacting their lists more and more, and they are making new, fresh, fun offers and are seeing results. Many are seeing growth right now, today.

Take Amazon.com While just about every other retailer was seeing a decrease in sales this holiday season, Amazon.com saw sales INCREASE by 17% over last year.

In fact, on December 15th, 2008, they report that they sold a whopping 6.8 MILLION items! This in just one day!

Why? How?

Simple. They keep promoting. They keep re-inventing the business they are in. They add new product lines, they make shopping fun, and they don’t put any of their attention on what the media says about a sagging economy.

Keep your eyes on what you want, and get the training programs that have the answers you seek in your hands now. It’s the fast, cheap way of getting the answers that will save your business.
