For some people, marketing seems like a really challenging thing to do. In fact, it’s really nothing more than common sense. Let me explain.

In all my years of marketing both online and offline, what I’ve always found interesting is how complex people tend to make their marketing efforts. They add layers and layers of complexity to something that should otherwise be a fairly simple process.

Here are the 3 core elements to a successful business.

1) Product: You need something to offer people, and it does not have to be a product that you’ve created. There is plenty of success to be had in marketing other people’s products.

2) Audience: You need to be able to reach the kind of people who can and who will buy your products. Again, this does not mean you have to start out with your own list, there are plenty of lists already out there that you can leverage in order to promote your products.

3) Offer: This is where the marketing is. You’ve simply got to make offers in everything you send out. The more offers you make, the more people will take you up on your offer and the more sales you’ll make.

My rule of thumb is that nothing goes out the door without an offer because I know that the only way to make a sale is to start out by making an offer.

If you’re sitting around wondering just what to do next, or how you’re going to make a living marketing on the Internet, now is the time to get to work on these 3 elements. It does not matter if you’ve been in business for years or if you’re just getting started, these are the elements that make business happen.

I can help you with any or all of these things, from helping you get a product, to finding an audience and making offers they will respond to, this is the work I’ve been doing for my clients since 1995.

Recently, I’ve been helping my clients offer other people’s products and rather than the standard 50% commissions, they are keeping a full 100% of the sale instead.

Think about it, with no customer service, no fulfillment issues, and nothing to do other than make offers to new audiences, this is the best, most effective way to fill up your Pay-Pal account quickly!

The neat thing with this type of arrangement is that all you’re really doing is getting an offer in front of an audience and letting other people do all the hard stuff.

They’ve created the product. They’ve written the sales letter. They’ve done the testing and refining, Now you come along an connect their message with an appropriate audience and they handle everything else while all the revenue goes to you.

I was just 22 years old when I first started to see results from my marketing efforts. But I learned marketing the hard way, and I would NOT recommend that you follow in my footsteps in your quest to become a better marketer because there are much easier ways to get trained.

Instead of watching what other people do and then trying to figure out how they are marketing, I would recommend that you instead become a student of marketing and learn from those people who have been there, who have done it, and who are now willing to teach you how you can become a better marketer too.

This past Friday, I was at my favorite place, the book store. I got a nice tall bottle of Fiji water, stuck a straw in it, and began reading an incredible book on marketing.

This is how I stay on top of my craft today. I read what other people write, I take what I think is the best of their ideas, and then I put those into play in not just my own business, but those of all my clients as well.

Long ago, I figured out that learning through trial and error was a long, often painful process that only occasionally resulted in producing valuable results. Now I get a piece here, another there, and I create marketing strategies that darn near always produce great results.

You should be looking, reading, and learning from people like me, who are in the trenches and who are willing to share the best of what we’ve learned with you so that you can get the results you want and need without having to go through the difficult process of learning the hard way.

Read my book on marketing, Motivational Marketing. Read reports, e-books, articles, anything you can get your hands on. This is the way great marketing minds are developed.

Over my career, I’ve read hundreds and hundreds of books. I regularly buy new books on marketing, selling, and business. I still to this day attend seminars, tune into teleseminars, and buy and download hundreds of special reports each year.

Some of them are real duds, but every one of them does have a gem, or the spark of something new that can make a measurable difference in a business I’m involved in.

Even if I’ve heard the information that I’m reading, I’ll read it again because it may spark a new thought, it may help me to solve a marketing puzzle in a new way, or it may simply serve to remind me of a strategy that I’d long forgotten about.

Think of like a surfer trying to catch the perfect wave. If he is not already in motion as the wave approaches, there is no way he’ll ever catch up to it.

Money. It’s the topic on almost everybody’s mind, and more often today than at any other time in recent memory. But is it really harder to make it today than it was just a few years ago?

The answer depends upon your mind set.

If you are the type that buys into what you hear on the news, chances are you may be feeling the pinch and seeing signs everywhere you look that there is less money to be found out there.

If on the other hand, you are the type that sees how much money is flowing on a daily basis all around you, you may have a different opinion.

Honestly, I’ve played this mind game both ways. I’ve been there before in the late 1980′s when I was booted to the curb from a nice cushy job because of “budget cuts.” I got depressed and saw  no way out of my situation.

That lasted about 5 months and 4 weeks, literally until the very last unemployment check was to arrive. That week changed many things for me, and I found, not just one, but four jobs in just 24 hours!

So after nearly 6 months of not even a nibble, sending out hundreds of resumes, a simple shift in mind set produced four job offers in just 24 hours.

Lesson learned. From that day forward, I knew that the only thing keeping me from getting what I wanted in life was me.

I’ve learned to get out of my own way and I can tell you that right now, there are hundreds of ways to make it in the business world.

Consider this: anything there is dramatic change in the marketplace (as we’re seeing today) it opens up as many new ways to hit it big as it closes. There is money out there, lots and lots of it.

The issue is that it may not be where it once was and that’s a very good thing!

I’ve been watching some of my clients thrive as new doors have opened up for them that may not have ever budged had things not gotten turned so upside down in our economy.

Keep your eyes open. What you’re looking for is out there, and it may be where you least expect it, but it’s out there.

Now, one thing I’ve begun to create is a new way for you to be trained, at home, by some of the brightest minds in our society today.

It’s 2am.

The phone rings.

At first you ignore it and hope it stops. It rings again, and again, and again. Finally, you stumble out of bed and search for the handset.

On the phone is somebody you care a lot about. A parent, sibling, your significant other. Something horrible has just happened to them.

What do you say to them?

What should you never say?

Do you even know what you would say in such a crisis situation?

The truth is most of us have no clue what to say, and in the moment what we say can have a lasting impact. You can either help them immensely, or what you can say can actually make things worse.

This week, I’m doing something very, very different. Instead of talking to you about building your business, I’m going to help you in an area that most people never give a second thought to until that phone call comes and there is an emotional crisis you must deal with in that moment.

It happened to me back in 1995. Luckily, I had just completed an intensive training program and had at least some idea how to handle the situation.

In my case, I prevented a best friend from committing suicide. Since that time, I’ve been faced with emotional crises a dozen or more times and in each instance, I’ve always known what to do and how to handle it.

You’ll never see this day the same way again!

You might have guessed that I don’t see “President’s Day” as the rest of the country does. To me, the real heroes will always be the presidents of companies. Yes, even a 1-person operation is worth celebrating today.

Throughout time, it has been the business owner who has created the jobs, taken the risks, invented the technology, and generally helped to move society forward in so many areas.

It’s the people who dare to step into the role of company President who are the heroes that I celebrate today.

I’ve always been impressed by these people. I’ve always aspired to be one. And I’ve spent the bulk of my career encouraging people to step up and become the President of their own organizations.

For those who are not in business, you are still, and will always be, the President of your own life. You’re the person who decides what’s right, what’s important, and where you want to go. That takes guts and if you’re in this role (as we all are) you set the course, you make to rules, and you get to live with the results – good or bad.

So today, as you think about President’s Day, think about the people who are, just like you, embracing their roles as President of their business, or as President of their lives.

Take a moment and ponder this. If you were truly the person who was making all the rules, the person in charge of your life, the President of it all, what would you do differently than you’re doing today?

Would you be putting up with the things you’ve been putting up with in your life that you don’t enjoy?

Would you be looking for new and better ways to live your life?

Would you have plans in place to build an even more successful business?

Go ahead and give yourself the promotion you truly deserve. Go ahead and sit at the helm of your life and take back the control that’s truly yours.

Go ahead and assume the position of being the President of everything in your life and stop giving away your power.

Celebrate today, not for those people who have served as heads of state, but the real heroes, those that served and continue to serve as the leaders of the companies that make our world work.

Your Business SHOULD be GROWING Right Now!

Imagine turning on the news and hearing that unemployment in the US is 10%. Hearing that, and the necessary commentary that follows would certainly lead you to believe that things
are really, really bad right now.

You may even consider cutting back or even stopping your marketing efforts. Some people begin to think about shuttering their businesses and going to hide under a rock until things start to look better.

Yet, there are other people who see this “bad” news in a very different light.

When I think of some of the news that I’ve been hearing about lately, I know that what I hear is only a very tiny sliver of the whole picture. I know that there’s more that goes unreported each day than could ever be reported.

I also know that our media makes the most money by scaring its viewers so they have a tendency to exaggerate the news and create news about what may happen in the future. Rarely
do these things happen, but in the moment, it sells the news to large audiences, and nobody seems to complain.

What if you tried to look at things from a new perspective.

For instance, 10% unemployment really means 90% employment. Translated, it means 9 out of every 10 people are working right now.

You could dig in a bit further too and realize that in the best of times, unemployment levels hover around the 5% level, so as “bad” ad things are, there are only 5 more people out of every 100 who are without work right now. Bad, but not a crisis.

I’ll focus my marketing efforts on segments of the population who want and can afford to hire me, to buy my programs, and who will attend my seminars. I will work harder to sell my programs, but I’ll still sell them.

Keep in mind that the economy has “slowed down” which is very different from the “economy stopping.” It’s just slower, it’s not stopped. Money is still changing hands, sales are still being made, people are still buying homes, cars, and investing in themselves.

Not only that, there are people who are right this very moment on the Internet looking for what YOU have to offer! But they won’t find you if you’re hiding under a rock. They won’t find you if you’re not getting the word out about what you’ve got and how you can help.

There is no real magic to building a successful business in tough times. Get the word out to more people than you ever would normally, and the sales will be there to carry you through no matter how hard the media works to convince us that the sky is about to come crashing down on our heads!

Or will it be just another year of the same old, same old?

When December 31st rolls around each year, we tend to get real excited about what the next year will bring. By about this time each year, we’re pretty much back to doing the same
things we’ve always done and we’re back to getting the same old results too.

This is a great time to take a moment to think about making a few small changes that can lead you to having a fabulous year instead of getting more of the same.

This past weekend, I attended a seminar in Los Angeles hosted by Terri Levine. I came away with 238 notes in just a 2-day event.

My point here is that you’ve got to look for places, people, and things that inspire you. I get inspired being around people who want to get more out of life. So I do attend and host seminars. I get inspired by reading books, listening to audio programs, and by watching motivational video presentations.

Life has a way of taking the wind out of our sail. It has a way to bring us down and often times all it takes is a phone call.

If you let it, life will rob you of your motivation, your energy, and your passion. These are the ingredients of success and in my world, I do everything I can to hang onto these things. What about you?

Are you fighting to stay on top of it all? Do you feel knocked down and dragged out at the end of the day? Are you wondering if things will ever get better?

You’re not alone, but being part of the crowd is not the best place to be. A better choice would be to find ways that will lead you to places the crowds will never go. You want to feel things the crowd will never feel. And you want to do things the crowd would never dream of doing.

When you do, you’ll begin to experience real freedom.

But most people will argue that they simply can’t even begin to imagine this because, hey did you hear what they said on the news tonight?

If you wait for all things to be lined up before you decide to take a step forward, you will miss out on the best parts of life before you finally figure out that you can have it all, you can have now, and you’ve already got what it takes to make it happen.

There is something you can give yourself now that doesn’t come in box, a bag, or wrapped up with bow, that you’ll love more than anything else you get this Christmas

You may be excited today because you’re going to both giving and receiving gifts for those you love most, but did you know that there is a gift that you can give yourself that will last a lifetime and that will give you great joy for all the years of your life?

It was back in 1994, Christmas Day to be exact that I gave myself this gift. Back then I was not making much progress in my career. In fact, I had just recently left a full time job with a great salary and benefits to go out on my own.

With only moderate success to show for my efforts, I knew I needed something more than I had access to at that moment. Although I can’t remember where I first heard or saw it, but the message I got, clearly, was that the best gift you could ever give yourself is the gift of knowledge.

Up until that point in my life, I wasn’t picking up and reading many books. I wasn’t listening to many tapes, and I had never been to a seminar. I did read a magazine here and there, but I really wasn’t growing my knowledge in ways that would make a difference.

That changed for me on Christmas Day in 1994 when I sat there looking at the gifts I’d received that Christmas and thought “how long will I really remember any of these gifts?” That day, I decided to get more serious about acquiring more knowledge.

I’ve never stopped learning. I’ve never stopped growing, and I have absolutely no intentions of stopping from today until the day I stop breathing. Jim Rohn has said many times that the best investment you can make is the investment you make in yourself.

The great truth in that statement is that what you learn today can never be taken away from you and once you learn something you can use that knowledge for the rest of your life.

I would guess that since that day in 1994, I’ve probably given myself several hundred thousand dollars worth of education in the form of books, seminars, coaching, web casts, tapes, and CDs. Today I’m seen by many as being a “Master Coach” because of my vast knowledge base from which I can tap into to help my clients.

This affords me the ability to charge decent amounts for my time in exchange for being able to deliver just what a client needs the moment they need it. In many respects, I’ve become a valuable resource to my clients because of the decision I made on Christmas Day 1994.

You may want to make a new decision for yourself too this Christmas Day. Decide to give yourself the gift that will keep on giving for as long as you live. It’s the gift that can never be taken from you and it’s the gift that will change everything.

All you have to do now is decide that you want to become more than you are today. Make the decision now and then take one small step in that direction. Maybe you’ll enroll in a seminar, or maybe you’ll order a book, or an audio CD today. Whatever it is, do it for yourself now.

This Christmas can be much more memorable for you if you do, and it could well turn out to be the Christmas that changes everything.
