There is an old saying that goes something like this “If you can’t find what you want on the market, build it.”

That sounds pretty simple, and I personally know people who have done just that and are today living the kind of life that most can only dream about.

Take one of my early mentors, Tony Robbins, as an example.

When he began in the seminar business, the last thing he wanted to do was create the same kinds of events that everybody else was offering at the time.

Instead, he asked an interesting question. He mused about the kind of seminar that he would most love to attend and at that time, found that no such event existed.

One of the criteria he had was that a seminar should first and foremost be entertaining. In other words, it had to take people out of the everyday and into an environment where they would have fun, they could laugh, and they could let down their guard.

Then, he wanted an event where people would learn new skills. Unlike going to see a movie, where you are entertained for an hour or so, you rarely walk out of the theater having learned very much.

Finally, he wanted an event that would empower participants to go out into the world and put into action the skills and knowledge they had acquired at his event.

Now, these were some pretty tall orders to fill, and all in a single event no less!

He eventually called this his “E3” formula, which means:

1- Entertain
2- Educate
3- Empower

You know the rest of the story. He built that kind of seminar event, and since that time has dominated the seminar industry in ways that may never be repeated.
If you’ve ever attended any of his events, as I have, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. You’re simply having fun, learning and when you leave, you have both the knowledge and motivation to apply what you’ve learned to your own life situation.

This is a powerful example of looking within to create something that will benefit many.

And it’s how you should be thinking about your career, your business, and the products and services you offer. Start by asking yourself;

What’s missing?

What would YOU love to have, do, feel, or experience that you’re not currently?

The answers you come up with will go a long way towards helping you to figure out the direction for your business.

If you can’t seem to get a bead on what’s missing, ask your current customers. They may not know exactly what’s missing, but you may be able to get enough of a clue from their complaints that you’ll quickly figure it out.

Right now, in my business, I’m using this exact strategy in building my next major project. While I’m not yet ready to talk about it, I know it will be a winner because I’ve been looking for just this sort of thing for myself and simply can’t find it out there in the market!

I also know that there are many others who would love what I’m building because it solves a major problem they have in their businesses.

So instead of looking “out there” for answers, take some time away from your daily grind and start looking inside instead. The answers you’re looking for are within you and they have always been there.
